Building an online shop for cash on delivery and local payment methods
Selling in markets where cash on delivery and local wallets matter takes more than a standard checkout. Here is what a store needs to earn trust and complete orders.

Many guides on e-commerce assume a customer with a card, a fixed address and plenty of trust in online shops. In a lot of markets that is not the whole picture: some customers prefer to pay when the parcel arrives, others use bank transfer or mobile wallets, and many want to talk to a person on WhatsApp before ordering. Two shops we built show how those needs shape the design: Zaha Fragrances, a perfume store, and Printacia, a shop for instant-download printables.
Offer the payment methods your customers already use
The payment page is where orders are won or lost. If the only option is a card the customer does not have, they leave. For a store selling physical goods in Pakistan, cash on delivery removes the fear of paying a stranger first. For a digital-product store, a mix of PayPal, bank transfer and local wallets such as JazzCash and EasyPaisa lets local and overseas buyers pay in the way they trust. Show the accepted methods early, not only at the last step.
Show prices in the right currency
If you sell to people at home and abroad, a currency switch in the header (for example PKR and USD) saves mental arithmetic and reduces drop-off. Keep prices consistent and make the active currency obvious.
Put delivery and returns promises where people look
Doubt is the enemy of conversion. State the delivery terms in the announcement bar and in trust badges under the hero: free delivery above a threshold, how long returns are accepted, whether cash on delivery is available. Link to full policies for shipping, returns, privacy and terms, because shoppers (and payment providers) look for them.
Reduce effort at checkout
- No account required. Account creation is a classic abandonment point. For digital goods, deliver the download straight from the confirmation page and by email.
- Few fields. Ask for what the courier or the file delivery needs.
- Clear variants. Show sizes, volumes and bundle contents plainly, with the saving visible.
Plan for cash on delivery properly
Cash on delivery brings customers in, and it brings failed deliveries too. Reduce the risk with a quick confirmation by phone or WhatsApp, accurate address fields, an order-tracking page and a returns form, so genuine customers stay informed and problem orders are caught early.
Let customers talk to you
A floating WhatsApp button, a visible contact page and a short FAQ answer questions that would otherwise block a purchase: file formats, printing limits, delivery times, authenticity. Reply quickly; speed of reply is a conversion tool.
Use bundles, saved items and reviews thoughtfully
Bundles raise the order value when the saving is clear. A saved-products list helps people who browse on one device and buy on another. Genuine reviews, with the reviewer's city and the product they bought, are more persuasive than a row of stars, and a dedicated reviews page gives search engines more to read. Only publish real reviews.
Do not forget the basics
- Fast, mobile-first pages. Most shoppers browse on phones.
- A cookie banner that respects the visitor's choice, and analytics that only load after consent.
- An accessibility statement and keyboard-friendly navigation.
- Search-friendly category and product pages with unique titles and descriptions.
